Tote bag | Julie Mehretu x MCA
To mark the Southern Hemisphere's first exhibition dedicated to celebrated New York artist Julie Mehretu, the MCA has produced a limited edition tote bag in collaboration with the artist, featuring her recent painting Sumo, 2024.
Inhabit the present moment, just as Mehretu's paintings have the unique ability to do and grab one of these totes before they sell out - a limited edition run of only 90 have been made. Wearable art from one of today's most acclaimed living painters, printed in Australia on the finest quality Belgian linen.
Julie Mehretu (b. Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, 1970) is one of today's most acclaimed living painters. The New York artist's first exhibition in Australia Julie Mehretu: A Transcore of the Radical Imaginatory, includes Mehretu's most recent TRANSpaintings (2023–2024), revealing her commitment to painting as a contemporary art form. It traces Mehretu's ongoing engagement with abstraction as a richly layered language, informed by histories of art and mark-making across millennia, from Chinese ink painting and Japanese manga to rock art, literature and music.
