Basket | Erica Dhamarrandji Rawurruwuy | Gapuwiyak | 12 x 10cm

This special and highly detailed basket has been hand woven by artist Erica Dhamarrandji Rawurruwuy. The basket is made from Gunga (Pandanus Palm) and features a Balgurr (Bush string) handle, both died with natural bush dies. It is made through a combination of techniques including a coiling process and a twining technique seen in the large scale woven mats created by Gapuwiyak Artists. Erica explains: "The old ladies at Mapuru homeland grew me up at and I learnt how to do fibre art from them."

Gapuwiyak Culture and Arts is a remote Art Centre in east Arnhem Land. The Art Centre assists artists to collect and prepare materials, make high-quality art, explore ideas, develop knowledge and skills, exhibit, market and sell their work.
