Inspired by MCA Collection artist Shirley Purdie's encyclopedic artwork, Goowoolem - Gijam Gija plants (2013-16), More than Memory, is much more than just a memory game. Featuring 36 of the 72 artworks that comprise Goowoolem Gijam ? Gija plants, we have developed 10 engaging games and activities that are suitable for people of all ages and abilities including: Memory Games, Counting Cards, Create a Story, Describe & Draw, Finding Colours, Guessing Games, Identifying Plants, Quick Draw, and Sequence Master.
The beautifully printed cards are presented in a deluxe box and accompanied by instructions for games and activities suited for one, two or more people. Using mca.art you can also scan each artwork to hear artist Shirley Purdie talk about the plants and their use in Gija language, adding a special and interactive element to the cards.
About Shirley Purdie
Born 1947, Gilban, Western Australia. Lives and works Warmun, Western Australia. Gija people.
Shirley Purdie is a senior Gija artist based at the Warmun Art Centre in the East Kimberley region of Western Australia. Following in the footsteps of highly regarded Kimberley artists, including her late mother, Madigan Thomas, Uncle Jack Britten, as well as Rover Thomas and Queenie McKenzie, Purdie began painting her Country in the early 1990s and is known for her richly textured natural earth pigments on canvas. Using ochres collected on her own Country, Purdie?s work draws on traditional Gija stories and Ngarranggarni (Dreaming) passed down to her as well as depicting sites and narratives associated with her ancestral Country.
