To celebrate International Mother Language Day we have created a t-shirt featuring greetings from diverse language groups across Australia. These words are inspired by the mother language of our amazing MCA staff and some of the artists we have exhibited and held in the MCA collection. Cultural and linguistic diversity is a key element of the MCA and we are proud to welcome guests from all linguistic backgrounds to our space.
Languages featured on this t-shirt are Gadigal (Ngallawah) , Gomeroi / Kamilaroi (Yaama), Wiradjuri (Gawaymbanha), Murrawarri (Biderah Thurin-ngka), Gumbaynggirr (Giinnagay), Ngunnawal (Yuma), Yuin (Wallawani), Meriam Mir (Maiem) and Gathang (Murrung Gayak).
Each word on the t-shirt is a greeting that translates to Hi, Hello, Welcome.
Proceeds from the sales of this shirt will support MCA programs for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, in turn helping keep language, art and culture strong.
