Soft Sculpture | Bird with Purple Crown by Trudy Inkamala | Yarrenyty Arltere Artists

Trudy Inkamala was born in 1940 at Hamilton Downs Station. Her country runs from Stanley Chasm all the way to Glen Helen Station. She is a pivotally important and respected elder in her community. As a role model and spokeswoman for her people she and her family members set up Yipirinya School to celebrate and nurture the Aboriginal kids of Alice Springs. Following her husbands passing in 2014 she found her way to art making with Yarrenyty Altere Artists.

"When I went to school at Hermannsburg (Ntaria), I met my husband. When my husband passed away in 2013 my sister Dulcie was asking me everyday to come and do sewing. She told me I can't stay at home by myself, too boring , too lonely. Now I'm here everyday, I get on the bus to come to do sewing everyday and to have a good laugh."

Yarrenyty Arltere Artists, an Indigenous art enterprise in the Larapinta Valley Town Camp, west of Alice Springs, are renowned for their vibrant embroidered soft sculptures depicting many facets of life in the desert — from wildlife and customs such as hunting and collecting, to social issues, family life, childcare and intergenerational learning. Constructed from recycled woollen blankets - that are hand dyed with natural bush dyes- before being sewn together and adorned with vivid hand embroidery, these are truly charming and unique sculptural installations to add to your collection.

Originally established in 2000 as a response to the chronic social issues faced by the town camp, Yarrenyty Arltere Town Camp Artists started as an arts training project. Now a vibrant and dynamic hub, Yarrenyty Arltere Artists is seen as an important part in rebuilding strength in the community and creating economic access for people, many of whom had not been engaged previously in the workforce. Town Camp Designs is a collection of products created by Ewyenper Atwatye, Tangentyere Artists and Yarrenyty Arltere Artists. They are a 100% Aboriginal owned and run art centre with all sales directly supporting the artists, and all profit going towards artists fees and future projects. Through their art, Town Camp Artists communicate stories about their families, identity and lives.
