Soft Sculpture | Always was Always will be by Rhonda Sharpe | Yarrenyty Arltere Artists

Rhonda Sharpe has quickly become of the most famous artists at Yarrenyty Arltere Artists, known for her bold expression and experimentation. Of this work she says:

"Sewing makes me feel happy and proud. It just comes to me when I am sewing or drawing, things come into my head. Like how I make two heads on the birds and on the person"

Yarrenyty Arltere Artists, an Indigenous art enterprise in the Larapinta Valley Town Camp, west of Alice Springs, are renowned for their vibrant embroidered soft sculptures depicting many facets of life in the desert — from wildlife and customs such as hunting and collecting, to social issues, family life, childcare and intergenerational learning. Constructed from recycled woollen blankets - that are hand dyed with natural bush dyes- before being sewn together and adorned with vivid hand embroidery, these are truly charming and unique sculptural installations to add to your collection.

Originally established in 2000 as a response to the chronic social issues faced by the town camp, Yarrenyty Arltere Town Camp Artists started as an arts training project. Now a vibrant and dynamic hub, Yarrenyty Arltere Artists is seen as an important part in rebuilding strength in the community and creating economic access for people, many of whom had not been engaged previously in the workforce. Town Camp Designs is a collection of products created by Ewyenper Atwatye, Tangentyere Artists and Yarrenyty Arltere Artists. They are a 100% Aboriginal owned and run art centre with all sales directly supporting the artists, and all profit going towards artists fees and future projects. Through their art, Town Camp Artists communicate stories about their families, identity and lives.
