Silk Scarf | Kwatye by Grace Robinya | Tangentyere Artists
This soft and stunning Kwatye silk scarf is a shining example of Australian wearable art by Grace Robinya of Tangentyere Artists. Grace grew up at the Hermannsburg mission and was one of the first artists to paint with Tangentyere Artists. An accomplished painter and seed jewellery maker of many years - her vibrant figurative works powerfully evoke important life events, locations and contemporary lifeways in the Alice Springs Town camps. Grace says of this work:
Kwatye atnyeme, kwatye urewe – All the rain falling, all the water flowing
"At the start of the year we had proper rain. All the rain falling, all the water flowing. In our studio we can hear the frogs! The river was running here in town and at Finke and Ntaria. Families go down, everyone, it’s so exciting to see water running, water flowing, we all go!"
Town Camp Designs is a collection of products created by Ewyenper Atwatye, Tangentyere Artists and Yarrenyty Arltere Artists. They are a 100% Aboriginal owned and run art centre with all sales directly supporting the artists, and all profit going towards artists fees and future projects. Through their art, Town Camp Artists communicate stories about their families, identity and lives.
Tangentyere is an Arrernte word that means coming together, working together. Tangentyere Artists operates a studio, gallery space, and outreach program - providing a hub for art activities across the Alice Springs Aboriginal Town Camps. The organisation is committed to innovative, sustainable, fine art outcomes for Town Camp Artists. Ewyenper Atwatye is a satellite textile project of Tangentyere Artists.
